NORTHLAND CENTRE AWARD WINNERS 2018-2019 SEASON:

The sponsors for the awards night were: Yovich & Co, Wealth Management 
and Graeme & Diane Lawrence (Green keepers award). 

FEMALE PLAYER OF THE YEAR:    KARINA COOPER – KAMO CLUB

Karina has had a great year, particularly at Centre level where she was successful as a member of the Centre  Open Triples Kamo team (as lead) and Champion of Champion Fours team (as lead) giving her three open Centre titles to date. She qualified in the top eight in the Centre Open singles and finished third equal in the Centre Junior Singles.

She was selected in the 1-5 Year Representative team and played in all events as lead in the Pairs This team finished in second place in the Regional tournaments held in 2018-19 season.  

At Club level she was Runner up in the Club Championship singles, 1st in the Academy Singles and 2nd in the Academy Pairs (1-10 year bowlers).

She competed in the NZ Chartered Club Fours tournament where the team finished in third place in November 2018.

Karina is still a Junior bowler, having just completed her third bowling season and already has three points towards her gold star. She is a hard working Club member and shows outstanding potential.

 

UNDER 25 YEAR PLAYER OF THE YEAR:  CAITLIN RIEDSTRA – ONERAHI CLUB

This was Caitlyn’s first year as a bowler and  she was successful in winning the Centre Junior Pairs, The Onerahi Club Championship Fours, Onerahi Club Academy Pairs, and was Runner up in the Club Academy Singles.

Caitlin has been disadvantaged by having to have three major surgeries during the season on ankle and a hand and if it had not been for the time she has spent recovering I am sure that we would have seen her competing in many more events.  As a sports person she understands and demonstrates the highest values when it comes to values and the culture of the Onerahi Club and her attitude on and off the green is pleasant and of a high standard.

 

TEAM OF THE YEAR:   NORTHLAND WOMEN’S PLACEMAKERS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM

This team was placed 5th equal in the Bowls NZ Inter Centre finals for 2019.

To be one of the top eight centres in NZ is a credit to the women concerned. They worked on individual training programmes  during the season coming together as a group when and where possible. The team values and behaviours were based on the values of their sponsor. the Placemakers  Company - honour; endurance; yearning to win, performance; passion; and preparation to lift the bar.

The team was: Sue Wightman (Singles); Ann Muir, Leanne Stewart (Pair); Maree Attwood, Anne Bateman, Maureen Parker, Carol Neely (Four); Dawn Owens, Jane Walker (Manager).


 

GREEN KEEPER OF THE YEAR:       WAYNE NEAL - MANGAWHAI CLUB

Wayne is certified in Grow Safe, Turf Pests and Turf Botany. He attends all Northland seminars and green keeping meetings and attends Far North Seminars. He assists green keepers at many other Northland and Far North clubs. He works seven days a week to maintain and keep the greens at Mangawhai Club as the best in Northland and OSH compliant at all times. He has been working as a green keeper for more than seven years and is committed to the highest standard of expertise and enthusiasm.

 

ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR:    MAUREEN PARKER – KENSINGTON CLUB

Maureen is the current Club Secretary/Treasurer/Club Co-ordinator for Kensington. She is a valuable member of the Executive and is responsible for the day to day Management of the Club, ensuring that all aspects of the Club OperatIons run smoothly. In her role she displays a good image to Club Members, visitors and sponsors. Although she is paid for her club secretary role, she works far more than these hours on a voluntary basis. She keeps accurate records of staff working hours, is responsible for the adherence of the Club with the Gaming Act, prepares accurate monthly financial reports for the Club Committee and finance sub- committee. She maintains accurate membership lists, including those of casual players, events which she co-ordinates, often running them on her own .Maureen holds a Bar Managers certificate and volunteers behind the bar, is a member of the Club Health & Safety Committee and is responsible for the Health & Safety program.

Maureen has contributed to the growth, success, enjoyment and profile of the Club through effective planning  and implementation of plans to create a successful business at the Kensington Club.

 

COACH OF THE YEAR:      JANE WALKER – MANGAWHAI CLUB

Jane coaches first year players on a regular weekly basis at the Mangawhai Club. She also coaches individuals on request.

She was the assistant coach with the Northland Women’s Representative team for 2019.

Jane has created a challenging and fun training environment for players at Mangawhai and in particular for players who were selected in the junior representative teams for 2018-19 from her home club.

 

SERVICE TO BOWLS AWARD:    PAT WARTH - KENSINGTON CLUB

Pat started her bowling career thirty nine years ago at the Ruawai Bowling Club  where she played for eight years and served on their committee for several years, including one year on the match committee. She then moved to Whangarei where she served on the committee from 1990 -1992 and was President in 1996-97. She was greens superintendent for 3 years and was on the sub committee for the Whangarei annual tournament, a role which she still has today. Since amalgamation of Kensington Men and Whangarei Women’s clubs she has been a board member for 8 years including President 2011-13 and has served as Chairperson for two terms. She holds a Bar Manager licence and serves behind the bar on a voluntary basis three nights a week. She is venue Manager for the Club Poker Machines.

Pat is a measuring qualified umpire, is an accredited coach, the Minute Secretary for the Kensington Board, has been a club selector and is an organiser for the club bi-annual garage sale.  She holds two Silver Bowls NZ titles, having been in the winning club Interclub teams in 2010 & 2012.

Pat has served on the Northland Women’s Centre as Secretary, and was on the amalgamation committee when the two Centres in Northland joined forces. She served for 3 years on the Centre Board.

Pat has her club at heart always, she has brought honour to the Club through her playing career. She makes members and casual participants feel welcome. Through her coaching, as the person behind the bar and her assistance with our poker machines, Pat never forgets that she is there to help others. Her many hours of voluntary work is much appreciated by everyone.
